Aim: To consider how magazine staff are divided in terms of their skills. To identify which skills are needed


Publishing sector in the UK

·         The publishing industry employs over 195,000 people, representing approximately 36% of the creative media workforce.

·         51,000 people employed in the newspaper sector.

·         50,500 work in journals and magazines

·         33,000 in the book industry

·         12, 000 in other information service active.

Comparing with NME

·         The picture is going to come here:

·         The magazine I compared this was NME magazine.

·         The jobs listed are different because mine is more detailed and hers has less people.

·         They both list Art Editors, Editorials and advertising sales director.

·         They both use the words such as Art Editor and Deputy Art Editor.

 


What do you think are the responsibilities of a Chief Editor?

Someone who is responsible for making sure everything that’s needed to be in a magazine is there and how it is presented.

·         Makes sure what he’s employers have done is right and in the perfect order.

·         To make sure that the work is not copied by anyone else, like plagiarism.

·         Check if there is no one that had made mistakes in the newspaper or the magazine that has been created.

·          To make sure what the sources that are accurate.

·         You are the person that represents the publication.

·         Attends functions, events, awards ceremonies.

·         Budget control

·         Build up contacts and connections.

·         Leads meeting

·         Publish an editorial calendar to highlight themes in a propriate months.

·         They have to motivate their team

·         Make sure that they have the best people doing the right things.

·         Legal decisions (following PCC  guidelines)

·         Decide on narrative or theme for each edition of the magazine for all staff to adhere to.

·         Manages careers of present and new staff motivating team.
