Aim: To consider what makes good market research and start a draft of a questionaire to help me plan my magazine.

How do you make an effective and helpful questionnaire?
  • Make sure my questions are explained well
  • Make sure the way I want my question to be answered clear and specific.
  • Make sure the question is easy to understand and clear.
  • Tell the person how to answer the question
  • Make sure it is in a organised/sensible order (logical order)
  • Give examples to show what you mean
  • Think about your wording when you write your question,  word like "prefer"
  • Using another choice in answer - specify
  • using numbers to measure their agreement of something for example 1 as the least strong of something and 10 and strong answer to something.
  • Ask about what you want to know
  • Ask precise questions, not vague ones.
  • Limit the amount of responses the person can give so you can handle their choices more easily.
Likert scale measures the respondent's attitude towards a particular subject:

Hip-pop music causes violence among its audience:
1-Strongly Agree
2-Agree
3-Neither
4-Disagree
5-Strongly disagree

This is known as Semantic-Differential Scale- it uses numbers to measure opinion.

Describe in your opinion of hip-pop music:

violent   1 2 3 4 5     Non Violent
Sexiest  1 2 3 4 5    Non-Sexiest
Racist    1 2 3 4 5    Non-Racist

Topics that I will need to ask about in my questionnaire:

  • Age range
  • Type of genres
  • Examples
  • Pictures that are colours if I am going to use pictures.
  • Preferred type of genres e.g. Hip-pop- what of hip-pop is it
  • How often do you read music magazines weekly??
  • Could have a question about bands, females singers, males singers and even the type of genre it is such as using the word "prefer"
  • Live events
  • Do you follow music blogs?? If so which one??
  • Their hobbies giving them options
  • Do they prefer listening to music live or on a electric device.
  • Do you/ have you ever read a music magazine?
  • If so Which one ??
  • If they have heard of it
  • Favourite Music blogs?
  • Ask if the reader has used/ is aware of other media platforms music magazines use( radio, website etc.)
  • Preferred Artists
  • Favourite font covers from range
  • Style of photography
  • Colour scheme of 3
  • Preferred magazine titles and straplines from a list
  • Preferred of style of language and tone used in magazines
  • Preferred genres of music magazines (lists)
Festivals

  • Shake down
  • Gay Pride
  • Brighton festivals

What makes a good questionnaire evaluation?

  • By including comments on what people think of the question, more like getting the audience's feedback.
  • It is always good to add questions that is not just about music.
  • By having Tables or pie charts because they are useful ways  to get the results.
  • Having to put all the question and the answers into a graph.
  • To have questions that also include males not just females or the other way round.
  • being manipulative
  • Mention any anomalies or unexpected results.
  • Explain what the point of the questionnaire was- what was I trying to learn.
  • A logical order of explaining what you learned from each question, starting from the top.
  • Think about -did I give it to the right group of people, where they really my target audience.
  • How could I have improved the style of question.
  • what other ways could I research what my target audience want.
