Codes Practice and Regulation

The laws of Defamation, Libel and Slander

Defamation is when you are writing offensive or insulting things about people. To stop that from happening, there is laws of defamation Act 1996 which is to protect the reputation of an individual against any hurtful things, saying unwarranted and unjustified attacks.

There are two different ways of Defamation and one of them is Slander which is a communication that is by using words of mouth.

The other way of Defamation is Libel which relates to publication in print or a more permanent from such as a broadcast.

Copyright and Intellectual Property

Copyright is a law to protect the rights of a creator, it enables publishers to make profit from materials they produce. Copyright became an official law in Act 1911.

Data Protection and Privacy

Dada protection is a law that started in Act 1988. It is to protect personal information of individuals names and addresses. The personal data that magazines might collect are things like phone numbers, addresses and names etc, these are things they get from subscribers.
They cannot pass information on to 3rd parties because that will damage the Data Protection and Privacy laws.

  1. Good work Cordelia you have written some good descriptions in your own words. There are some grammatical errors with sentence structure and word usage e.g. you can't "say an attack" or "damage a law". Well done for referencing book. Please can you publish your page on Picture Editor and Image Sourcing. Thanks Ms B.
